The Academy.
The Academy is a unique, highly flexible program operated by F·E·G·S that helps young people aging out of foster care prepare for their future. The Academy offers a range of services designed to help young people in foster care reach their educational goals, enhance their personal growth and development and prepare for and enter the world of work.
All foster care youth participating in the Academy are matched with a Youth Advisor that works closely with them to identify their goals and develop a plan to meet those goals; provides constant support to the young person all along the way; and helps the youth get back on track if he/she loses their way.
The foundation of F·E·G·S’s approach is our CareerFirsts™ model which acknowledges the necessity for a comprehensive, multi-pronged strategy to help young people achieve self-sufficiency. Our model recognizes that, in addition to helping youth develop the skills and strategies to enter the workforce, young people also need support in achieving the personal growth necessary to avoid risky behaviors and get on a path toward economic self-sufficiency. This supportive services component, provided in coordination with the foster care agencies, is particularly important for youth in foster care who have suffered the trauma of abuse of neglect and experienced the instability of foster care.
Academy services include academic services such as tutoring, homework assistance and GED classes; career development services including career exploration, job readiness training, job shadowing, internships and job placement; post-secondary education planning; and supportive services including mentoring, counseling and personal skills development.
The Academy initiative was originally launched with generous support from the Heckscher Foundation and is operated by F·E·G·S in the South Bronx.
