F·E·G·S Education and Youth Services programs, which reach thousands of young people each year, offer creative and innovative solutions to address a diverse range of educational, family, personal and employment needs. The services are offered at F·E·G·S' facilities as well as in public schools in New York City and on Long Island. F·E·G·S' major initiatives in this area include:

After School Programming

  • 21st Century Community Learning Center
    Provides educational enrichment, cultural enrichment, recreational activities, and leadership building activities to students aged 5-13 who attend PS 176 and P.S. 43 in Queens, as well as P.S. 346 in Brooklyn.

  • Advantage After-School
    After-school program that enhances academic skills, strengthens emotional and social competencies, and expands awareness of vocational opportunities. Arts and crafts, homework help, college clinic, and the culinary club are examples of classes offered to participants.

  • Beacon 176
    Provides a broad range of educational, cultural, and recreational activities after-school, during the evenings, and on Saturdays for youth and their families in the Cambria Heights community. Services include: educational enrichment, music and dance, organized sports and recreational activities, cultural enrichment, technology classes, radio drama workshops, and summer camp.

  • Beacon 43
    Provides a broad range of educational, cultural, and recreational activities after-school, during the evenings, and on Saturdays for youth and their families in the Far Rockaway community. Services include: educational enrichment, music and dance, organized sports and recreational activities, cultural enrichment, technology classes, community gardening, and summer camp.

  • Leadership In Focus Team
    L.I.F.T. is an intergenerational internship and community service program, which engages middle and high school students in programs with seniors and youth in the Cambria Heights community. Internship opportunities are designed to develop a lifelong habit of community service.

  • Neighborhood Development Area (NDA)-Beacon Education
    Provides small group academic tutoring after school to students at P.S. 43 whose academic performance is in the lowest 20% of their respective classes. For each student, school staff will select the two subjects in which the student needs the most assistance; these subjects form the core of the student's tutoring instruction.

  • NDA-Beacon Leadership
    17 youth from M.S. 43 and Far Rockaway high schools are trained as youth mentors and intern in the F·E·G·S Beacon program at P.S. 43, where they serve as role models for elementary school students. The youth mentors are also partnered with 10-17 seniors from the Long Island Living Center and participate in inter-generational activities.

  • NDA-Beacon Employment
    Program offers a comprehensive array of employment workshops and counseling, as well as supervised internship and job opportunities, for 14 Far Rockaway youth ages 14-19 years old. Activities include employment counseling, job-readiness skills, internships, and job retention.

  • Out of School Time (OST) BLGJ
    After-school program for students who attend the Bronx School for Law, Government, and Justice, which includes educational enrichment, cultural enrichment, and leadership building activities.

  • OST Bronx Lab
    After-school program for students who attend Bronx Lab, including academic remediation, cultural activities, career development, sports and movement activities.

  • OST Beacon MS 43
    After school program for students in the area of MS 43, including educational enrichment, cultural enrichment, recreation, wellness, and leadership building activities.

  • OST-New School
    After school program for students who attend the New School for Arts & Sciences, including educational enrichment, cultural enrichment, and leadership.

  • OST Beacon PS 43
    After school program for students in the area of PS 43, including educational enrichment, cultural enrichment, recreation, wellness, and leadership building activities.

    High School Programming

  • Attendance Improvement Dropout Prevention, (AIDP) New School for Arts & Sciences
    Attendance improvement program to support a cohort of 100 high school students at the New School for Arts and Sciences, who have a history of truancy. Through counseling, attendance outreach, family involvement, and career development, the program aims to improve student attendance and promote social and academic growth.

  • AIDP, West Side High School
    Attendance improvement program to support a cohort of 100 high school students at West Side High School, who have a history of truancy. Through counseling, attendance outreach, family involvement, and career development, the program aims to improve student attendance and promote social and academic growth.

  • Rockaway Community Connections
    Provides on-site behavioral health assessment, crisis intervention and referral to the F·E·G·S Far Rockaway Mental Health Services for students and families attending Beacon 43.

  • Young Adult Borough Center (YABC) Kennedy HS Year Two
    Alternative high school program that provides academic remediation, counseling, career development, college preparation, arts and recreation, and skill-building workshops to students at John F. Kennedy High School who attend classes in the evening, in order to pursue professional internships and employment during the day. Students in the program earn a regular high school diploma.

  • YABC Kennedy HS
    Alternative high school program that provides academic remediation, counseling, career development, college preparation, arts and recreation, and skill-building workshops to students at John F. Kennedy High School who attend classes in the evening, in order to pursue professional internships and employment during the day. Students in the program earn a regular high school diploma.

  • YABC George Washington HS
    Alternative high school program that provides academic remediation, counseling, career development, college preparation, arts and recreation, and skill-building workshops to students at George Washington High School who attend classes in the evening, in order to pursue professional internships and employment during the day. Students in the program earn a regular high school diploma.

  • YABC Lehman HS
    Alternative high school program that provides academic remediation, counseling, career development, college preparation, arts and recreation, and skill-building workshops to students at Lehman High School who attend classes in the evening, in order to pursue professional internships and employment during the day. Students in the program earn a regular high school diploma.

  • YABC Washington Irving HS
    Alternative high school program that provides academic remediation, counseling, career development, college preparation, arts and recreation, and skill-building workshops to students at Washington Irving High School who attend classes in the evening, in order to pursue professional internships and employment during the day. Students in the program earn a regular high school diploma.

  • Learning To Work (LTW) Kennedy HS
    Attached to the YABC, the LTW Center provides subsidized internships for 150 participants, in order to develop students' post-secondary opportunities. Through career exploration, work readiness training, professional internships, and college exploration, students get a hands-on sense of the doors that are opened through successful high school graduation, post-secondary education, and professional training.

  • LTW Lehman HS
    Attached to the YABC, the LTW Center provides subsidized internships for 150 participants, in order to develop students' post-secondary opportunities. Through career exploration, work readiness training, professional internships, and college exploration, students get a hands-on sense of the doors that are opened through successful high school graduation, post-secondary education, and professional training.

  • Region One Support Services
    F·E·G·S provides support services to short-term and long-term suspended middle and high school students in eleven of Bronx Region One's Alternative Learning Centers. Through strength-based assessment, crisis intervention, case management, and psycho-educational workshops, including F·E·G·S 's award winning SAAVI curriculum, the program seeks to reduce the rate of recidivism among suspended students. Curricula covers topics such as sexual health, pregnancy prevention, anger management, and conflict resolution, in order to assist students in developing strategies to constructively respond to conflict and successfully transition back to their community school.

  • Workforce Investment Act (WIA) In-School Youth Employment (Y4)
    This program provides career development, college exploration, academic remediation, and recreational activities for students aged 14-18 who attend the Bronx School for Law, Government, and Justice. It encourages youth leadership and development through summer employment, internships, college visits, and tutoring services.

  • WIA In-School Youth Employment (Y5)
    This program provides career development, college exploration, academic remediation, and recreational activities for students aged 14-18 who attend the Bronx School for Law, Government, and Justice. It encourages youth leadership and development through summer employment, internships, college visits, and tutoring services.

    Out of School Youth Programming

  • Career Development Institute (CDI)
    Serves out- of- school, economically disadvantaged youth, ages 19-21 in the South Bronx. Educational Programming: Offers pre-GED and GED classes through integrated curriculum focusing on vocational skills and employment exploration. Vocational Programming: Provides general office skills training through work-based learning, office technology courses, and internships. Participants who have completed the internship and satisfactorily completed their occupational skills training are placed in an unsubsidized job, while also supported by on-going job placement assistance, counseling, job readiness training, recreational programming, and youth development experiences.

  • Creating Job Opportunities for Youth
    Provides pre-GED, GED, career development, vocational training, job placement, and case management for participants age 19-21 who have been recently discharged from an OCFS facility, are on parole, or are at risk of criminal court involvement.

  • Foster Care Services - CDI
    Provides career exploration and subsidized internships to youth affiliated with the Children's Aid Society's Hope Teen Center. Through intensive, short term engagements in professional internships, the program aims to reduce the barriers that prevent youth in foster care from accessing the services they need to successfully transition to adulthood.

  • NDA-Out of School Youth
    Provides pre-GED, GED, career development, college preparation, and case management to participants aged 19-21 who are out of school, not working at the time of enrollment, and meet income eligibility requirements.

    Specific services include case management, GED preparation, job readiness and placement, exposure to the world of work, conflict resolution, recreation, and much more.
